Students from the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria, Campus Hagenberg, recently completed a project aimed at raising awareness about bioeconomy and the wood value chain. The project challenged the students to create a short video that answers critical questions such as: Why is bioeconomy important? How can wood contribute to sustainability? And what opportunities or risks does bioeconomy hold for Upper Austria?
The project, supported by Business Upper Austria (Building Innovation Cluster) and the Centre for Social Innovation, kicked off with a presentation by bioeconomy expert Bernhard Kastner from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna. This session provided the students with an essential overview of bioeconomy principles, which they later used to develop their video concepts. After pitching three ideas, the students proceeded with interviews, including insights from SFK Tischlerei and Mr. Starhemberg.
Mr. Starhemberg explains his understanding of bioeconomy and the importance of sustainable resource management, addressing questions such as, “What exactly is bioeconomy?” and “What is the current availability of wood resources?” He also highlights statistical evidence of wood growth, underscoring the importance of maintaining a renewable supply of materials.
Claudia Haslinger from SFK Tischlerei discuss the versatility of wood, answering questions like, “What is possible with wood? What can be created from it?” She emphasizes the environmental benefits of using wood in design, particularly its ability to be easily disassembled and recycled.
The video educates the public about the importance of bio-based production, consumption, and lifestyle choices, with a specific focus on sustainable practices in the wood industry.
