Location: Waldcampus in Traunkirchen

Organised by ZSI GsmbH & BIC

To strengthen wood-based bioeconomy value chains, the EU project Engage4BIO hosted a co-creation workshop on training. The aim was to create training and mentoring formats that could be implemented in the Austrian Engage4BIO hub, in partnership with various renowned adult training providers.

Held in the scenic locale of Waldcampus Traunkirchen, the day-long workshop brought together participants from diverse adult training providers, such as the Wirtschaftsförderungsinsitut (WIFI), the Berufsförderungsinstitut (BFI), the Volkshochschule (VHS), the Traunkirchen Forestry Training Centre (BFW), and the Institute for Vocational and Adult Education Research (IBE). Additionally, representatives from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) enriched the discourse. Key players from the wood-based bioeconomy value chain, including organizations like Holzbau Austria, and representatives from the Chamber of Agriculture and the Office of the Upper Austrian Federal State Government were also active participants and contributed with their important perspective to the development of the training formats.

The educational institutions played a vital role in shaping the formats due to their experience in identifying target groups, as well as in developing and implementing training programs. Regional development actors complemented this effort by providing valuable information about available resources, other training formats within the region, and regional strategies. Stakeholders within the quadruple helix proved to be of utmost importance, as they provided insights into potential target groups along the value chain and highlighted specific training.

Interactive and Solution-Focused Approach

The workshop adopted an interactive, resource- and solution-oriented methodological approach. Participants collaborated in break-out groups to prototype training and mentoring formats, incorporating a feedback loop. This culminated in the creation of two distinct formats, each equipped with flexible modules.

Format 1: Empowering Decision Makers

The first format is tailored for decision-makers in businesses across the value chain, as well as those utilizing wood as a substitute product. It is structured modularly, with the initial “basis module” being mandatory. This module lays the foundation for a comprehensive bioeconomy approach. Subsequent modules delve into themes like ecosystems (woods and forests), materials (saw), business models (building), consumption (furniture), and circular economy (re- and upcycling). Participants have the freedom to select modules based on interest and relevance. All modules integrate theory and practical application, offering opportunities for company visits along the value chain.

Format 2: Empowering Planners

The second format is designed for planners such as site managers, timber construction managers, architects, and more, as they wield substantial influence in material selection. The training commences with an introductory module, presented as a teaser video or conference contribution (lasting 1 – 1.5 hours) on wood-based bioeconomy and its potential. Once engaged, participants can embark on an interactive, in-depth modular (crash) course spanning three days. Two days are dedicated to theory and knowledge acquisition, while one day is hands-on, practice-oriented. The modular course can be complemented by comprehensive mentoring.

Innovative Elements for an Engaging Experience

Both formats showcase elements and unique qualities that render the training and mentoring formats not only innovative but also highly appealing. Moving forward, BIC and ZSI will collaborate with some educational organisations to implement these activities. With dynamic training and mentoring formats underway, the project is poised to unlock new potentials towards a sustainable, thriving future.
